Football Phrase of the Week: Confirmed as New Manager

DF: Hello everyone. This is Damian from the Languagecaster team and I hope you are all doing well. Welcome to this week’s football phrase which is when we look back at some of the football language from the weekend. And today we look at the expression, ‘confirmed as manager of…‘

Confirmed as manager

DF: Now the big football news of the weekend came after the league meeting between Barcelona and Real Madrid, which Barca won in a seven-goal thriller to all but wrap up the Spanish league title. The Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, announced he would be leaving at the end of the season to start a new position as manager of Brazil. The Brazilian Football Federation announced the move – they confirmed that he would be the new manager. The meaning of confirmed suggests that the decision is now official – he will officially take over as the new manager of the Brazilian international side.

The Brazilian national side has not played well for a while and confirming the appointment of such a high profile manager – multiple league titles and of course five Champions League wins – means that Brazilian fans now have some hope before the 2026 World Cup finals.

Take up the position

DF: So, if Ancelotti is leaving Real Madrid who is replacing the great Italian coach? Well, it looks very much like former-Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will take up the Real Madrid post. This phrase, ‘take up the post‘ or ‘take up the position‘ also means to start a new job so former Spain midfielder Alonso looks as if he will be the new Real Madrid manager after nearly three years as Bayer Leverkusen manager in Germany – though Real Madrid have yet to confirm his appointment.
